Hike 11 – Shevlin Park II

I’ve already blogged about Shevlin Park (hike#3), you might recall. On that hike, most of it was through the dark using a headlamp. Not the best type of hike to take a lot of photos. Therefore, I’ll make up for that photo-light entry with this photo-heavy entry! (If you want more info on Shevlin Park, check out Hike #3.) I have been struggling to get out and hike as of late. So many distractions and activities had been pushed up onto my priority list. I hoped not to repeat locations for my 100 Hikes Project, but when it boils right down, getting outside and exercising is more...

By the Numbers (1 of 10)

This is the first of ten installments about my artistic journey I like to call, “The Numbers.” (To read the rest of this series, click here. Along with my big hiking goal, I’ve got a few artistic goals as well. One of them is to create the hike’s number using material found on the hike. I got this idea while hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in 2011. When big milestones are reached, like mile 100, 500, 1000, etc, it is common for a hiker to write the mileage in the trail using rocks, sticks, flowers, etc. One thru hiker I met made a mile marker every 100 miles for...

Hike 10 – Peter Skene Ogden Trail

With visions of kaleidoscopic colors and other-worldly-esque textures still on my mind from my jaunt around Paulina Lake two weeks ago (Hike#9), I wanted to go back and explore more of the dozens of miles of trails found in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. With a hiking partner in tow, we decided on hitting a section of the Peter Skene Ogden National Scenic Trail. Named after one of the great explorers of the West (who also has Ogden, Utah named in his honor), the trail runs nine miles along the northern side of Paulina Creek, from Ogden Group Camp Trailhead to the shores of Paulina...

Hike 9 – Paulina Lakeshore Loop

It’s taken me a while to work on this post. At first, I wrote a lot about Newberry Crater National Volcanic Monument. I wrote a few paragraphs about its history and how it’s very similar to its neighbor, Crater Lake National Park. I wrote about how this was going to be a 2-day, 23-mile backpacking trip but was cut short due to smoke. I wrote about a lot of things. But you’d get bored and not enjoy it, I’m sure, so I deleted all of it. Instead, I’d rather get to the meat and potatoes of this hike report by sharing with you a lot of photos I took. I usually...

Hike 8 – Sparks Lake Trailhead to Quinn Meadow

Hike 8 – Sparks Lake Trailhead to Quinn Meadow

For hike #8, I headed out of Bend, up Cascades Lakes Scenic Byway, past Mt. Bachelor and into the beautiful Cascade Mountains. I’m trying to get as many hikes as I can up here at higher elevation before winter arrives, ending hiking season abruptly. (I give it a few more weeks before that happens.) This hike was a solo hike, in more than one way. I came to the trail by myself and had the trails to myself, a bit astonishing considering that it was such a beautiful afternoon. I guess residents of Eastern Oregon consider Labor Day (Sept 5th) the last day of the hiking season, no...
